In the county of Powys near Hay on Wye and the Brecon Beacons Niel Bally offers life classes and a choice of painting, printing and drawing courses from his studio, set in the foot hills of the Black Mountains, close to Talgarth. The classes are small and suitable for all levels including beginners, those preparing for art school and the more experienced. Most of the courses are concerned with working directly from the life model, still life material and the exceptional surrounding landscape. The studio is very spacious, purpose built and full of light. The home is welcoming providing guests with both a dinning room and sitting room plus the use of a secluded walled garden with fine views over the open countryside. The house and studio have an interesting collection of art and books and the days are punctuated by Sue Bally’s hospitality, refreshments and delicious home cooked lunches. This is all included in the £55 per day fee.

Niel Bally received a traditional training from the Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing in Oxford and the West Surrey College of Art and Design. Since the 1980s he has run his own courses and taught in a number of art schools and adult education colleges. Underpinning Niel’s teaching abilities is a significant breadth of experience and understanding of both modern and traditional approaches to representational and abstract art. The classes are small and an important emphasis is placed on individual tuition and development.

“Niel and Sue Bally are very hospitable: classes were originally held in the house. Now they have built a new spacious studio. They are interested in each student as an individual. The teaching is well planned and yet responsive, and punctuated by Sue’s delicious meals.”

“Niel’s courses are very special. He somehow manages to gently lead both beginners and those with more experience to produce work of a standard they would have thought far beyond their capabilities. And it’s all friendly, non-threatening and set in a magical part of the Welsh countryside”
